The La Catedral Art Gallery Museum has recently acquired a work by the eminent painter Ramon Pichot i Soler (1924-1996), which can now be seen on display at the museum. La Catedral Gallery is a leading cultural entity in Tarragona, its regions and Catalonia, created to promote knowledge and appreciation of art among citizens.

Ramon Pichot i Soler was born in Figueres in 1924 and was part of a prominent family of artists from the Empordà. Nephew of the painter Ramon Pichot Gironès, he began studying the cello following the instructions of his father, a professional musician. However, he soon discovered his true vocation in the visual arts. Settled in Paris, he trained in the post-impressionist movement, a style that he faithfully maintained throughout his career. His uncle's friendship with Picasso and Ricard Opisso allowed him to meet them personally, and each of them influenced a part of his style and work. He began painting at the age of sixteen and in 1939 he held his first solo exhibition in Barcelona. This was the starting point of a prolific career, with exhibitions that made him known throughout Spain and Europe.

In 1947, while exhibiting at the house of the Marquises of Palmerola, in Sant Hipòlit de Voltregà, he married Anna M. Sagí, who would become one of his muses, as would later be his daughters. Throughout the fifties, he exhibited at the Municipal Exhibitions of Barcelona (1951 and 1953) and in several cities in Spain such as Madrid, Bilbao and San Sebastián. In March 1954 he presented his work at the Cercle de Bellas Arts in Madrid, and soon began to gain recognition in the United States. In 1968 he exhibited for the first time at the Trosby Gallery in Palm Beach, Florida, and two years later at the Hammer Galleries in New York, where he achieved great success that would be repeated on numerous occasions until 1981.

His painting reflects a deep interest in post-impressionism and figuration, focusing mainly on landscapes –especially of Cadaqués– and portraits of female figures, within the academic canons and with a marked influence of Renoir. These two themes were the ones that brought him the most recognition. In 1992 he participated in an exhibition at the Conde Duque Gallery in Madrid, together with works by his brother Antoni and his uncle Ramon. His last exhibition took place in 1995 at the Spirit of Barcelona, in London.

Ramon Pichot painted until practically the last day of his life. He died in Barcelona on May 24, 1996. His work, widely recognized and valued, is in numerous public and private collections around the world.
