Since the end of March, Jonathan Monk presents its new installation at Parking , the space located at 206 Paris Street in Barcelona and directed by Moishan Gaspar . Conceived to rethink the traditional limits of art, Parking offers a new look at artistic exhibition, exploring unusual and unconventional places.
Jonathan Monk (Leicester, 1969) is known for his ability to reinterpret fundamental works of minimalism and conceptual art. Since beginning his training at art school in 1987, he has worked with the idea of appropriation, questioning the notion of "originality" and emphasizing that all work is, in a way, a rereading of the past. His practice not only pays homage to artists such as Sol LeWitt, Bruce Nauman and Lawrence Weiner, but also challenges the idea of art as a single, immutable object.

For his installation at Parking, Monk travels to the 1990s to revisit two key figures in contemporary public art: Félix González-Torres and George Maciunas . González-Torres, with his iconic interventions on billboards, transformed the relationship between art and public space. In this context, Monk focuses on Untitled (For Jeff), a work that shows in black and white the image of a hand on a large poster. This piece serves as a starting point for his reinterpretation of Hand In Glove, by Maciunas, a founding member of Fluxus. This work consists of a sheet of paper with the image of a hand printed in black and white and an envelope with a printed glove.

In Parking, Monk establishes a visual dialogue between these two works by placing Maciunas' glove on the main wall, while the image of the hand is reproduced on a translucent vinyl on the glass of the entrance. This composition plays with the relationship between inside and outside, physical and conceptual. Furthermore, the title of the installation, Hand In Glove Compartment, plays ironically with Maciunas' piece while alluding to the glove compartments of cars, an element in disuse, bringing the artist's characteristic humor and irony.
Jonathan Monk's works have been exhibited in prestigious international institutions, such as the Palais de Tokyo in Paris , the Guggenheim in New York , the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin , the Institute of Contemporary Art in London and the Museum Kunst Palast in Düsseldorf . He has also participated in group exhibitions of great relevance, such as the Whitney Biennial , the Biennale di Venezia , the Berlin Biennale and the Taipei Biennial . In addition, his works are part of prominent collections such as the Tate Collection in London , the MOCA in Los Angeles , the Collection Lambert in Avignon and the Guggenheim Museum in New York .
