Joe Dart: the island house
bonart mataró - 17/03/25

The MAC in Mataró hosts the exhibition The Island House by the Mataró artist Joe Dart (1966). The artist proposes an exhibition conceived as an immersive installation. He does so by drawing inspiration from the thesis of the professor and architect Òscar Canalís on the film versions that recall the plot of Homer's Odyssey, one of the main epic poems of ancient Greece. Thus, the exhibition offers a contemporary reflection on the search for paradise and the complexities of human relationships in the Mediterranean context.

The exhibition, which can be visited until May, is presented as an installation that combines literature, cinema and painting. Dart uses frames from reference films, printed in oil on large-scale paper, to recreate scenes of houses with swimming pools and beaches. These visual elements, accompanied by sound and light effects, seek to transport the viewer on a sensory journey through the Mediterranean.

With The Island House, Joe Dart not only invites us on a visual journey through the Mediterranean, but also proposes a profound reflection on the fragility of our environment and the human dynamics that transform it. His work shows us how art can become a space for dialogue between the mythical past and contemporary issues . This exhibition, halfway between remembrance and denunciation, reaffirms Dart's commitment to memory and the preservation of a landscape that, like the Odyssey itself, is in constant mutation.
