The Girona Arts and Culture Council will focus on cultural rights in 2025

During 2025, the Girona Arts and Culture Council will dedicate its work to reflecting on how to ensure the cultural rights of all citizens. In a meeting held on February 21 at the Auditorium Palau de Congressos in Girona, the members of the Council agreed that their actions will revolve around six fundamental cultural rights.

These rights include: the right to cultural creation , which includes both those who want to become professional in this field and those who want to develop artistic expressions from a community, educational or simply creative perspective; the right to access culture , guaranteeing that all citizens of Girona can enjoy the cultural offer without discrimination and under equal conditions; the right to cultural diversity , to ensure the representation of different cultural identities in the city and promote social cohesion through culture; the right to cultural participation , promoting the active involvement of citizens in the cultural governance of Girona; the right to lifelong artistic training , both in formal education and in non-formal and community learning spaces; and finally, the right to popular culture , promoting traditional and popular practices as tools to promote diversity, interculturality and collective participation.

This initiative comes at the suggestion of the Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Culture of Girona City Council, Quim Ayats i Bartrina , who has urged the newly established Council to focus its work on the protection and promotion of the cultural rights of the Girona population. According to Ayats, “cultural rights are part of human rights and, therefore, must be guaranteed for everyone, allowing full participation in cultural life and the free exercise of their own cultural practices”. He has also highlighted that “the diversity of expertise of the members of the Arts and Culture Council will help to deepen the objective of turning culture into an engine of social transformation”.
