Starting on March 8, the Sala Trinitaris in Vilafranca del Penedès will host the exhibition Visions YI by the artist Miguel Ángel Encuentra (Aliaga, Teruel, 1951). The event will be presented by the local art curator, Ariadna Cervera Orri , and by the artist himself.
In this exhibition, Encuentra proposes a profound visual journey into the complexity of identity and human interconnections, using a pictorial language that stands out for its technical mastery over canvas and paper. The artist makes an initial use of straight lines as an exercise in technical mastery and control, where meticulousness in the management of the stroke becomes a vehicle for unprecedented creative freedom. His mastery of the oriental calligraphic rhythm merges with his personal technique, creating a synergy between the discipline of art and the fluidity of expression. Through sinuous lines, the painter establishes a visual dialogue that connects the artistic traditions of the East and the West, turning each stroke into a reflective act on precision and expression. In his works, structure serves as a vehicle for creative freedom, where the artist explores the relationship between control and spontaneity. This pictorial process allows the artist to move intuitively, without prior thought, to create unique and unrepeatable pieces.
As for the term YI, which gives the exhibition its name, it evokes the state of meditation and contemplation of the creators, a way of observing the environment from a meditative place. This vision is translated into an inexorable work in form, content, execution and material, which is apparently made with ease, but is the result of a deep internal work. Visions YI does not follow the traditional dichotomies between objectivity-subjectivity or between form-meaning, but is presented as an open metaphor of the lived reality, an expression of the concrete state of mental and creative openness of the artist.
The sea, a future project
In this exhibition, the artist also presents some previews of his latest work (his Marines), an evolution of the YI concept, which introduces an unconventional reinterpretation of the seascape. The artist breaks with pre-established forms while maintaining its essence. Through this innovative vision, Encuentra creates marines that present a deep commitment to Eastern art, one of his most significant influences. Comparing his marines with those of a great reference, Hokusai, he introduces a personal and renewed vision of this genre, maintaining tradition but adding his unique stamp. Thus, his marines become a reflection on space, time and nature, an expansion of his search to connect Eastern roots with his own contemporary vision of art.
The Aragonese artist, with a career spanning five decades, is one of the most prominent on the Spanish contemporary scene. He has been recognized for his monographic exhibitions and his work in series such as Roturas, Eclipses and Del espacio a la penumbra. His 2020 project Negro Esperanza won the Grand Prize for the Most Outstanding Contemporary Aragonese Artist, awarded by the Aragonese Association of Art Critics (AACA), in recognition of his stance against immobilist aesthetics through the conceptual reinterpretation of reality.
