Rosa Brugat: bones of men of color

A reflection on time, war and degrowth in the Espazioa Room.

Rosa Brugat: bones of men of color

The artist Rosa Brugat i Batlle (La Jonquera, 1956) participates in the temporary exhibition 'War and Time. Decrecimiento', organized by the Sala Espazioa from February 14 to March 30, 2025 in Vitoria-Gasteiz. In this exhibition, Brugat presents her work entitled 'Bones of Men of Color'.

According to sources from the organization, “this exhibition proposes, in addition to extending our proposal of 'War and Time', to expand it to that of 'Decrease'. On the one hand, within the idea of 'Decrease', it is also necessary to explore that of 'Time', which we consider central to the proposal of this exhibition. In the first exhibition of 2022, we wanted to explain that the concept of 'Time', together with that of 'War', intended to show the perception that our time is not the same as that of people who live immersed in a war conflict. Now, with the title and approach of the exhibition 'War, Time: degrowth', in which time is central, we want to convey a sense of urgency. Nature has limits and we want to express that they are being exceeded.”

It should be remembered that the exhibition 'War and Time' was inaugurated in the Espazioa room in 2022, with the participation of more than 120 artists and the carrying out of more than 30 parallel activities. According to the organizers, "a few months after curating this exhibition, wars continue and there are more and more conflicts that generate many deaths and destruction of resources. More energy crises and inflations appear that always end up paying for the most disadvantaged people. It is for this reason that we have reconsidered renewing our exhibition activity and cultural expression against wars, since we identify that war is the cruelest expression of the interests of the system (such as: the military spending of the States of Central and Western Europe and the USA, the war in Gaza, etc.)".

The work presented by Brugat, 'Bones of Men of Color', reflects on the issue of race. According to the artist, "in biological terms, all human beings share 99% of their DNA, regardless of their race or ethnicity. Genetic differences between races are minimal and do not justify any form of discrimination or racism. Genetic variability within a racial group can be even greater than the variability between different groups. It is essential to remember that race is a social construct rather than a biological category, and we all deserve the same treatment."
