The Crater under debate

The Olot Espai Cràter museum building was the subject of a lively debate on April 21st at a meeting organized by Arquitectes per l'Arquitectura with the support of the Escofet-Molins company, well-rooted in the place and with an international scope.

The event, during which a book about the design process was presented, began with a conference explaining the project by the authors, Toni Casamor and Anna Codina. The explanation was extensive and demonstrated the specificities of the building based on three concepts: the landscape of the forest, that of the path and that of the fire of the crater, all three representing the intentions of the building. Holding these events in the same buildings that are discussed is of great interest because what is said can be compared with what is experienced.

I was one of the first to give my opinion on the building and the conference. The conference used the concept of landscape, which is now widely used in the practices and theories of architects in Europe and America, because the concept of landscape bridges the concept of abstract space and the concept of Place to Live. Furthermore, the relationships between place and building were the most significant theme of the book that was being presented.

Apart from the success of the concepts, my opinion is that the building is very well constructed, especially considering that it is largely underground and thus responds to three landscapes merged into a very well-defined architectural atmosphere and a great success for social, school and tourist visits. A new place to live in Olot.
The other invited members criticized the building in a way that I have always found unpleasant, saying what other architects would have done to improve the final result. The company that supported the event defined the space as a building worthy of Olot and that attests to a cultured society.
