Located between Passeig de Gràcia and Gran Via, the Comedia cinema, closed at the beginning of 2024, will reopen as the Carmen Thyssen Barcelona Museum with an ambitious proposal for temporary exhibitions. The inauguration is scheduled for 2027, due to the municipal urban planning procedures and the development of the architectural project, which will be carried out by a Catalan architecture studio in collaboration with an international studio, responsible for the comprehensive rehabilitation of the historic Palau Marcet building.
The project is managed by the investment fund Stoneweg Places & Experiences , known for cultural initiatives that, in some cases, have been abandoned halfway, such as the Hermitage project in Barcelona. The real estate fund acquired the Palau Marcet, location of the future museum, for 75 million euros from the Pla i Planàs family . At the same time, Stoneweg is promoting an immersive art center in the former Godó i Trias factory, in Hospitalet de Llobregat.

The Carmen Thyssen Museum in Barcelona will exhibit a selection of its collection, marked by the presence of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and Expressionism, with a special emphasis on Catalan art from the 19th and 20th centuries, with prominent figures such as Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusiñol and Eliseu Meifrèn. However, the project aims to go beyond the mere exhibition of historical heritage and the rooms will be transformed into a space for dialogue between tradition and contemporary avant-gardes, incorporating current works and temporary exhibitions that will explore disciplines such as fashion, decorative arts or jewelry, in order to attract a diverse audience.
The museum's governance, headed by the Art i Llegat Barcelona foundation and under the supervision of Carmen Thyssen and her daughter Sabina Thyssen , has guaranteed that the launch of the new museum will not interfere with the transformation of the small exhibition space in Sant Feliu de Guíxols into a future museum.
The agreement was formalized on December 12 at an official ceremony at Barcelona City Hall, chaired by Mayor Jaume Collboni , who highlighted that the city "recovers its cultural ambition" with the creation of the Thyssen Museum, a project that represents a "historic leap forward" in projecting Catalan art onto the international scene.
