'The Ripplings': art and community as an engine of social transformation

'The Ripplings': art and community as an engine of social transformation
Nora Barnach barcelona - 29/11/24

In 2016, the Jeroni de Moragas Private Foundation established a collaboration with the artist Santi Moix to create a large-format work called 'The Ripple'. This creation, developed with the aim of raising funds to guarantee continued support for the people under the care of the foundation, is part of the innovative Pas per tu artistic project. With this program, the foundation aims to merge art and social inclusion, creating plastic works with the collaboration of its wards and a recognized and socially committed artist.

Social integration

The Jeroni de Moragas Private Foundation was created in 1993 as a non-profit organization, born from the need to provide support to people with functional diversity and mental illnesses. The foundation's mission is to improve the quality of life of these people and promote their integration into society. Since its inception, the foundation has been committed to defending the rights of people with disabilities, adopting a model based on personalized attention and transparent management. One of the main objectives of the foundation is to promote services with a positive social impact. This includes attention to the functional diversity of adults and the development of lines of research and innovative actions in collaboration with other organizations. Work is also being done to give visibility to people with disabilities as active agents in society, through job placement projects and community leisure activities. In line with the clear objectives of the foundation and its foundational values, the Pas per tu project seeks to obtain the necessary resources to guarantee these essential services and offer personalized support to the people under guardianship, thus ensuring the continuity of services as a basis for their personal, family and community recovery.

Diversity and community

Despite the main goal based on fundraising, this artistic project aims to go further and be a powerful tool to raise public awareness of the richness of diversity and the importance of creating a sense of community that ensures the social inclusion of people . The work 'The Ripple' is not just an artistic expression, the colored circles in the work symbolize the individual contributions that, together, create a harmonious composition to show that the union of various perspectives and experiences can result a rich and meaningful creation. The work, painted vertically on a cardboard support arranged to form a surface of 200x280 cm, manages to convey the idea of generating spaces and communities that are enriched by diversity.

Visual impact: Santi Moix

Characterized for creating works of great visual and emotional impact, Moix guided Manoli, Rosa, Eva, Pedro, Xavi and Jaime during a single day, and together they turned a white canvas into an explosion of colors and emotions, combining drawing, painting and collage and fusing organic elements with psychedelic sensations. The artist, born in Barcelona in 1960 but settled in New York for decades, is a multifaceted creator who works in painting, sculpture, drawing, engraving and ceramics, but he particularly excels in painting as a means of reflection, as it has been this joint and altruistic creation. His works often incorporate elements of nature that reflect a constant dialogue between man and his environment. Moix has held numerous international exhibitions, including renowned museums and galleries in Europe, Asia and America. His ability to fuse traditional styles with contemporary techniques has earned him a prominent place in the global art scene. This piece, 'The Ripple', exemplifies his commitment to experimentation and collaboration, highlighting the importance of community in the creative process. For Moix, the Anglo-Saxon term ripple, which describes the concentric circles that form when a stone is thrown into the water, perfectly symbolizes the objective of the Pas per tu project. An initial action creates expansive waves that progressively impact and mobilize more distant environments. This metaphor fits perfectly with Pas per tu's vision, where a small action can have a significant effect on the community and beyond.

Art without barriers

In 2023, this work was exhibited at the Espai Isern Dalmau of the Lluís Coromina Foundation in Barcelona, accompanied by two medium-format works, 'The Ripplings', created by Moix to complete the initial mural. Currently, 'The Ripple' and one of the two medium-format works are at the Furniture Restoration Center of Catalonia (CRBMC), where all the necessary supports have been applied to preserve them until they are acquired. The other work in the collection is still on display and can be visited at Espai Isern Dalmau. The Pas per tu project and 'The Ripplings' are notable examples of how art can serve as a powerful tool for social change. Art, in this context, is seen as a medium for expression without barriers. The collaboration between the Jeroni de Moragas Foundation and Santi Moix represents the possibility of creation in spaces and societies enriched by diversity, and aims to exemplify teamwork and the motivation to continue fighting for the vital rights of people with functional diversity. 'The Ripple' brings to the table, once again, the importance of art as a visual manifesto and as an effective instrument to transcend barriers and unite people from different fields, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of beauty.
