Reviews in the CAC Fabra i Coats management competition
bonart barcelona - 28/11/24

The Catalan Association of Art Criticism (ACCA) and the Plataforma Assembleària d'Artistes de Catalunya (PAAC) recently made public their opposition to the terms of the competition for the direction of the Center d'Art Contemporani Fabra i Coats ( CAC) , promoted by the Institute of Culture of Barcelona (ICUB) . Both entities highlighted several deficiencies that, in their opinion, compromised the transparency and fairness of the process, as well as perpetuating job insecurity in a sector that already suffers from often insufficient conditions.

Faced with this scenario, the ACCA and the PAAC urged the ICUB to urgently reconsider the competition and adapt the process to the standards of the Code of Good Practices for Management Competitions . In response, on November 26, the Institut de Cultura de Barcelona (ICUB), with the support of MACBA, communicated a series of modifications to the basis of the competition for the direction of the Center d'Art Contemporani de Fabra i Coats , incorporating some of the demands made.

Improvements in the transparency and consolidation of projects

One of the most prominent adjustments is the extension of the duration of the management contract, which goes from two to four years. This change is key to ensuring more stable planning and the possibility of developing long-term projects. The scoring criteria have also been revised: now 20 points correspond to the assessment of the curriculum (first phase), 40 to the two-year project (second phase) and 40 to the interview (third phase).

In relation to the evaluation commission, the initial reference to "representatives of the PAV" has been replaced by "representatives of the cultural sector". In addition, it has been guaranteed that the names of the commission members will be made public after the deadline for nominations has passed, thus improving transparency and responding to one of the central criticisms of the process.

Another relevant measure is the extension of the deadline for submitting candidacies, which has been extended by another 20 calendar days, until December 16 . This decision seeks to offer more time to interested parties to prepare their proposals, without affecting the 36 candidacies already submitted.

Although the changes have been well received, the PAAC has stressed that there is still a way to go. Although the modifications represent a step forward, the organization claims the need to consolidate these good practices in all processes linked to public cultural management, emphasizing the importance of respecting and valuing the work of professionals in the sector , guaranteeing fairer and more efficient processes in the future.
