Arrives in Miami 'Beyond the Single Image. Spanish Photography from the Foto Colectania Collection', a selection of Spanish and Portuguese photography, the result of an ambitious collaboration between the Foto Colectania Foundation and The Margulies Collection at The Warehouse .
With more than 3,000 works by Spanish and Portuguese authors and a valuable archive of 24,000 negatives by the photographer Paco Gómez, the Foto Colectania Collection is among the most important private collections of Iberian photography in the international arena. This exhibition offers a selection of 150 works by 36 photographers, curated by Carles Guerra , which explores the multiple ways in which photography documents reality. Guerra has structured the exhibition in 20 thematic sequences and 10 blocks to create a photographic atlas that links images and contexts.
Among the photographs on display, it is interesting to observe how works that have become iconic coexist with other visual proposals that transport us to very different scenarios and eras. Thus, the image of 'L'home al carrer Pelai' captured by Xavier Miserachs in 1962 shares space with the African rituals documented by Jordi Esteva , the Spanish peasant celebrations immortalized by Cristina García Rodero and more recent works such as Laia 's Photo Novels April of the series 'On Abortion' or the fictions of 'Afronautes' by Cristina de Middel . These photographs coexist with Adriana López Sanfeliu 's constant monitoring of the life of the Salazar family, the portraits that Ricard Terré took in a special education center in 1998, the community scenes captured by Fernando Gordillo , and the photographs of 'Casament de Penella' taken by Gabriel Cualladó in 1960. In addition, prominent names such as Txema Salvans, Pilar Aymerich, Joan Fontcuberta, Xavier Ribas, Manolo Laguillo, Alberto Garcia-Alix and Leopoldo Pomés, among others, are also part of the selection, thus creating a living tour through the photographic heritage of an era, while offering at the same time an open window into traditions and everyday life .

Guerra defends this collective vision with the idea that the evolution of photography goes beyond iconography : it is in the plurality of images that we find the different perspectives of collective events in a more complete and truthful way. According to the curator, the modernization of photography led to a certain "iconization" of some events, but a more complex look is often necessary. For him, moments of great meaning need as many images as possible. It is for this reason that each photograph in the exhibition takes on value in relation to the others, weaving a story that appeals directly to the collective memory and the reinterpretation of the past and the present.
The collaboration between The Margulies Collection , a recognized American institution, and the Foto Colectania Foundation , with one of its patrons Martin Z. Margulies , is a recognition of the cultural and artistic value of Spanish and Portuguese photography, which reaffirms its fundamental role in contemporary visual culture.
The show will officially open on December 2 to coincide with the start of the Miami Art Basel art fair, but will be available to the public from tomorrow, November 13, until April.
