'Lo que fue no es pero es': the obsolescence of structures

A reflection on degradation and the ability to adapt in a constantly changing world.

'Lo que fue no es pero es': the obsolescence of structures

The passage of time and the influence of human action on the disintegration of contemporary structures are the starting point of 'Lo que fue no es pero es'. The exhibition invites us to reflect on the decay and transformation of the structures that surround us, whether physical or conceptual. With a particular focus on the metaphor of the life cycle of Penicillium - a fungus that, despite having given birth to penicillin, a key substance in 20th century medicine, today has almost fallen into disuse -, the exhibition explores the limits of modernity, the human capacity for adaptation and the inevitable obsolescence of what was once considered essential.

This first exhibition of the Laberinto Studio project will take place at CUARTO, an art space in Hospitalet de Llobregat. For three days, from September 26 to 28, 2024, the exhibition brings together the creations of three artists: Linus Bonduelle, Gonzalo Guzmán and Bruno Ollé, who with their works of painting, sculpture, installation and sound open a dialogue about our society and the systems that govern it. Through these disciplines, the artists highlight the opportunities for change and regeneration, questioning the structures that, like penicillin, have been out of date with the passage of time.

The exhibition also has the special collaboration of the microbiologist Dra. Julia Sánchez, who provides a scientific perspective with a representation of the four generations of penicillin. Through this vision, the exhibition draws a parallel between the effectiveness, or lack of effectiveness, of this substance and our ability to face contemporary challenges.

'Lo que fue no es pero es' invites us to observe our current reality with critical eyes. The questions it raises are profound: can we really improve the inherited structures or are we plunged into an irreversible process of degradation? At a time of constant change, the exhibition is an opportunity to reflect on the limits of our progress and the new forms of resilience we might develop.
