Josep Maria Carreté (Vila-seca, 1963), museologist, archaeologist and cultural manager with extensive experience, has been appointed secretary general of the Department of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya which will be led by councilor Sònia Hernàndez, the former director general of Patrimonio in the previous term. Carreté also directed the Museum of Archeology of Catalonia (1999-2000); the Heritage area of the Generalitat between 2006 and 2009; the management of the National Art Museum of Catalonia (2012-16) and then the management of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona (2016-2022). In 2022 he won the competition to lead the management of the Catalan Cultural Heritage Agency.

Trained at the University of Barcelona, Carreté was a founding partner of one of the first companies specializing in archaeological interventions and heritage projects and is an expert, with several published articles, in Roman archaeology. He directed the Gavà Prehistoric Mines Archaeological Park project and was director-manager of the Gavà Museum (1990-1997 and 2000-2006). Between 1997 and 1999 he was in charge of the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona, where he launched the interpretation centers for the Roman villas of Els Munts and Centelles.
