Matthias Goerne, Andrè Schuen, Malin Byström, Erika Baikoff, Julia Kleiter, Johannes Martin Kränzle and the Casals Quartet are some of the highlights of the 32nd edition of the Schubertiade, which will be held between August 10 and 1 of September Likewise, young voices such as Katja Maderer, Gabriel Rollinson and Beth Taylor promise to offer a few surprises in their debut at the festival, which will once again welcome renowned pianists such as Wolfram Rieger, Julius Drake, Daniel Heide, Hartmut Höll, Alexander Schmalcz , Hilko Dumno, Magnus Svensson and Hamish Brown.
For his part, Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), composer who is experiencing a renaissance, will have a strong presence in the repertoires that will be performed this summer, among which there will also be works by Britten, Dvořák, Tchaikovsky, Previn, Strauss , Wolf, Schumann, Elgar, Harty, Debussy, Honegger, Rossini, Duparc, Viardot, Chaminade, Weill, Rangström, Berg and Fauré, as well as by the African-American composer William Grant Still, as a new highlight. One of the main novelties of this year's edition, on the other hand, is an important presence of productions devised by the festival itself.
Along these lines, Schubert's Complete Works for Violin and Piano will be performed in a single concert by Catalan musicians (Maria Florea, violin & Alex Ramírez, piano and Abel Tomàs, violin & Emma Stratton, piano) and the Complete of Bach's cello suites, with the counterpoint of Benjamin Britten's Suite, for seven cellists also from the country: Arnau Tomàs, Laia Puig, Erica Wise, Pau Codina, Mariona Camats, Guillem Gràcia and Oriol Prat. For his part, pianist Kit Armstrong will delve into the third of Franz Liszt's Years of Pilgrimage, a work of enormous complexity that is difficult to hear live. For its part, the Palau de la Música Chamber Choir will present a Schubertiade and the soprano Katharina Konradi will meet with the Cosmos Quartet and the pianist Joseph Middleton for another Schubertiade that, like those old meetings, will include the premiere of a work, in this case, the arrangement that José María Sánchez Verdú has made of several Schubert songs in a co-commission of the Schubertiade and the Granada Festival.
Among the productions of the festival's own collection, it is worth highlighting a show to vindicate the figure of the soprano Conxita Badia, a pioneer of the lied in Catalonia, devised by the soprano Elena Copons, who will perform with the pianist Deirdre Brenner, as well as the world premiere of first cycle of songs by the composer Hèctor Parra about Mercè Rodoreda's poetry. David Alegret and Rubén Fernández Aguirre make their debut at the festival combining this repertoire with works by Toldrà and other Catalan composers based on the poetry of Tomàs Garcés.
Finally, a family concert, Clàssics prodigiosos, conceived and presented by Òscar Dalmau with the musical advice of Pere-Andreu Jariod, will serve to bring us closer to different composers who, in their day, were considered "child prodigies". The violist Lara Fernández and the pianist Noelia Rodiles will participate.
The Schubertiade, on the other hand, will once again host Lied the future, a program to support young European talents in the field of poetic song and chamber music that aims to take advantage of the festival's projection capacity, to deepen the their training and act as a professional insertion tool to help them enter the national and international circuits. As part of this program there are twenty concerts in cities such as Figueres, Barcelona, Valls, Terrassa, Madrid, Cáceres, Dénia, Segura de la Sierra, Munich (Germany), Zeist (Netherlands), as well as collaborations with the Leeds Lieder Festival (Great Britain). This year's scholarship holders for Lied the future are: Elia Farreras (soprano) & Lucas Huber Sierra (piano) and Inés López (mezzo-soprano) & Jesús López Blanco (piano), who will work with Christiane Iven and Wolfram Rieger, and Eva Zalenga (soprano) & Teodora Oprișor (piano) and Florian Stoertz (baritone) & Aleksandra Myslek (piano), who will work with Johannes Martin Kränzle.
Dates in the Basque Country, Cantabria and Barcelona
For the seventh time, the Schubertiada Valdegovia, in the Basque Country, presents in July a very attractive line-up featuring the soprano Sara Blanch, in her Schubertiada debut, alongside Malcolm Martineau; Schubert's The Beautiful Millwoman with Samuel Hasselhorn and Ammiel Bushakevitz; and the debut in Spain of the Chinese tenor Zhuohan Sun with the pianist Teodora Oprisor. The festival is completed with two chamber concerts with the Cosmos Quartet and a marathon starring Patricia Cordero (violin) and Cristina Cordero (viola), Montserrat Egea (cello), Jorge Martínez (double bass) and Juan Barahona (piano) in the frame from which you can hear some of Schubert's favorite works, such as the Arpeggione Sonata, the String Trio, the Impromptus for piano and the Truita Quintet. It must be said that the Schubertiade is a private initiative with strong support institution that, however, requires private support to continue. The collaboration with the Banc Sabadell Foundation, which is now in its tenth year, is essential in consolidating its commitment to talent a new patronage plan is underway that facilitates access to the concerts. Each Friend or Member of the organization will receive invitations to the concerts of the festival.
