The Atrium Artis Foundation presents the exhibition of the artist Raúl Barrilado Between the city and the dream. Trained in technical illustration, Raúl Barrilado (Granollers, 1972) has always been attracted by pictorial expression, to which he has been completely dedicated for a few years. This exhibition is a well-structured and thought-out selection.
The first series we find is the one dedicated to subway scenes. They are mostly generously sized pieces, in black and white, made with graphite and sometimes oil on canvas. With a hyper-realistic tone, they show powerful characters. "At one time I was constantly traveling by metro", recalls Raúl, "I am very observant and studied people. I've always really liked the human figure. This is how I came up with the idea of painting travelers abstracted in their tasks, capturing the faces, the pose worked from photos, and with them I made a composition. It is not about real scenes, but a combination of figures captured in different transport interiors".
Next to this set of a radically urban character, Barrilado presents another, more recent work, where he has painted buildings of fantastic architecture framed in a Mediterranean landscape of sky and sea blues. "These are dream works, in which I intend to make a turn and experiment with the architectural side, which interests me a lot. I have painted impossible perspectives, which do not correspond to the spaces of real life", explains Raúl.
