Helmut Newton – Fact & Fiction, the great exhibition of the Marta Ortega Pérez Foundation (MOP Foundation) is dedicated to the life and work of the legendary German-Australian photographer. Throughout his six-decade career, Helmut Newton came to be considered one of the most important photographers in the world. A prolific creator of images and a true visionary, he continues to exert a great influence on modern photography and the visual arts today.
Helmut Newton – Fact & Fiction is a project promoted in close collaboration with the Helmut Newton Foundation and curated by Philippe Garner, Matthias Harder and Tim Jefferies, who devised a tailor-made proposal for the MOP Foundation space at the Port of A Coruña, work by Elsa Urquijo Arquitectes. "We immediately agree that Helmut would have loved the renovated silos and warehouses of the exhibition space, the port environment and the very special architecture of the city. We enjoy imagining the images he could have created in this environment", they say.
The selection of photographs that make up the exhibition is a fine example of Newton's signature bold, empowering and uncomplicated visual language, including his iconic 'big nudes' and unforgettable portraits of exceptional figures such as Andy Warhol, David Bowie, Margaret Thatcher , Charlotte Rampling, Elsa Peretti, Daryl Hannah, Jerry Hall, Naomi Campbell, Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld.
As a counterpoint to the most iconic images, the exhibition will also include examples of Newton's lesser-known "landscapes": highly evocative images of the places that influenced his work such as Paris, Los Angeles, Monte Carlo, Berlin, Vienna or Las Vegas and which are also a reflection of the special atmosphere of the location of the show in A Coruña.
The exhibition will also discover together with his work the personal facet of the artist through a series of videos showing Newton working and conversing; of personal images that offer an insight into his childhood, career and relationship with his wife June and other documents such as posters, cameras and equipment, accessories, curiosities and memorabilia.
