Canals Galeria presents, until December 31, the exhibition Picasso and Sant Cugat. Coinciding with the commemorative events of Picasso Year 2023, Canals Galeria has conceived an exhibition of prints by Picasso, together with a photographic report on why, in 1965, a tapestry of him was made in Sant Cugat. The search for this tapestry, exhibited at the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, was carried out by the director of the gallery, Josep Canals. This exhibition of prints by Picasso and the unpublished documentation of his tapestry made in Sant Cugat are the contribution that this art space makes to the Year of Picasso 2023, remembering the artist's involvement with the city.
Miquel Samaranch, director of the Casa Aymat factory in Sant Cugat, wanted Picasso to participate in the renovation of the tapestry that was produced there. In the spring of 1965, Samaranch traveled to France and brought Picasso a linoleum from which the tapestry was reproduced. The involvement of the artist at that time, at 85 years old and still very active, gave great relevance to the Catalan Tapestry School of Sant Cugat and was the beginning of the involvement of other prominent artists in the country, who were make Sant Cugat a land of artists, which is still a reality today.
The weavers Jaume Busquets, Josep Royo and Joan Aymerich from Sant Cugat worked on Picasso's tapestry Nature morte sous la lamp , who still tell anecdotes about the event today.
Now, 58 years later, Josep Canals has documented this work by Picasso and the exhibition presents the documentation together with Picasso's engravings.
