As part of the Barcelona Gallery Weekend, the Zielinsky gallery presents on September 14 at 6 p.m. The wound, the bandage, the cure, the first solo exhibition of Sandra Monterroso (1974, Guatemala City). The exhibition can be visited until November 24.
Monterroso has developed an artistic practice in which he strives to restore his cultural and ancestral heritage as a Maya artist. His research is aware of both the current political reality and the history of violence in Guatemala - racial, social and gender - as well as the power structures inherited from colonialism in order, from a situated knowledge, to "heal the colonial wounds through the art and rituals of Maya and other cultures”.
Monterroso's projects take into account three conceptual axes: the materiality of the environment - she is particularly interested in natural resources and the feminine craft practices of the Mayan culture of her Q'eqchi community -, a connection with spirituality and ancestry, and the history of coloniality in Central America, from a female perspective.
