The exhibition Requiem for a Week of the Sea: from Sant Pere to Sant Pere, can be visited from June 22 to July 23 in the Open Room of La Sala Center d'Art Contemporani in Vilanova i la Geltrú. The aim of the exhibition is the serene description of a long period that ended definitively with the dissolution and death of the Setmana del Mar Institute, the generic entity that gathered others under the same umbrella to start and organizing the popular celebration for 43 years.
The exhibition calls for the recovery of Baix-a-Mar's patronal festivals in honor of Saint Peter, apostle and fisherman, first head of Christianity. This tour is made through the posters and programs of the Week of the Sea from 1971 to 2014. It has been commissioned by the Casa de la Feta to Isidre Roset i Juan, Doctor in Art History and has the support of the collectors Ms. Victoria Canyelles Pastó, Mr. Gilabert and Mr. Capdet in addition to the altruistic collaboration of social entities in Vilanova and Geltrú.
A Requiem as a ritual of farewell and memory to the late Setmanes del Mar. And the reaffirmation of Sant Pere as Baix-a-Mar's Festa Major, the first departure of popular dances and folkloric hors d'oeuvres that begins the summer festival cycle in the city. Semana del Mar was born in July 1971 and died in July 2014. During its long life it evolved and incorporated new elements of bestiary and hors d'oeuvres in the festive entourage of Vilanova and la Geltrú such as Carpa Juanita and Porró, the giant Pere Pescador or the mermaid Elena Muarena.
The temporal sequence is presented divided into five blocks corresponding to five historical moments that the city and Baix-a-Mar in particular have experienced intensely, in the context of urban growth and social and neighborhood movements that have shaped the current physiognomy of the our community: The Genealogy of Power (1971-1976), The Aesthetics of Existence (1977-1983), Traffickers of Dreams (1984-1992), The Information Society (1993-2003), The Strategic Fracture ( 2004-014) and Patterns and patterns as an epilogue.
