La Galeria Senda presents "Back To One" by Anthony Goicolea

The Senda Gallery presents, from April 13, Back To One by Anthony Goicolea. The exhibition brings together new drawings and paintings of various techniques and dimensions. According to Goicolea, "these works are characterized by a sense of familiarity and another dreamlike world. I lean towards scenarios that focus on the figure caught in an "in-between state" of transition that defies clear interpretation as a result of stones of touch or conflicting cultural signifiers. Many of the figures are painted in a moment of weariness or boredom. Their acid colors, androgynous poses and deadpan gazes are rendered in a thick blur on rough linen to reveal past layers of paint."

Goicolea's paintings are moving, cinematic portraits that blend cross-cultural references, encoding cultural meanings drawn from folklore, mythology, religion and fairy tales into my paintings to draw parallels between the past and the present.

"I paint fictional scenarios through the lens of my personal and family history. Growing up Cuban, gay, and Catholic in the Deep South in the early 1970s forged my awareness of social constructs such as regional traditions, rituals and history, and how these elements develop and define the sands of identity, gender and place."
