The painter and artist from Emporda Carles Bros has died suddenly in news that became known during the presentation of the Galp Costa Brava 2024-2029 candidacy at the Casa de Cultura de Llançà. Closely linked to the world of the sea and fishing, Bros had to participate in this presentation of the Costa Brava Fishing Local Action Group. "It was a completely sudden natural death, precisely because Carles Bros had to participate today in the event about fishing by painting a mural," explained the mayor of Llança, Núria Escarpanter, about the artist whom she defined "as a person very involved with Llançà and all its cultural activities, especially about the world of the sea". Bros was 67 years old.
Born in Terrassa, Carles Bros had been based in Empordà for many years, especially in Mar d'Amunt, from where he had created much of his artistic production. In Llançà, specifically, he is the author of the large mural of the Banc dels peixos that can be seen painted on the containment dike in front of the fishing port. This work of 3,100 m² was the culminating work of the Art of the Web exhibition that Carles Bros exhibited for eight years in 11 museums in different countries. It is considered the largest mural in the world under the sea.
He received his academic training at the University of Girona and the Real Cercle Artístic de Barcelona, where he studied curation and cultural management. He has held more than 150 individual exhibitions in Europe and Asia and has been invited to exhibit by governments of different countries and by institutions and museums. In addition, since 2010, Bros has been the promoter, director and curator of the contemporary art exhibition "Festival Tramuntanaart".
In 2012 he received the Catalan Fisheries medal from the Generalitat de Catalunya in gratitude for the defense, throughout the world, of sustainable fishing in Catalonia. He is also the holder of the Young Painting award from Sala Parés (Barcelona), the first Begur award and the first La Cellera de Ter award.
Bros made the sea and the defense of traditional fishing his creative habitat and, precisely, these days you can visit the exhibition of the Museu de la Mediterrània in Torroella de Montgrí, his Posidonia exhibition.
