The Montserrat Museum (MDM) is opening its doors again, once the renovation work on the air conditioning of all the rooms of the permanent exhibition has been completed. At the same time, during the two and a half months in which it has been closed, improvements have also been carried out to adapt the new spaces under Plaça de Santa Maria for the future expansion of the museum itself.
From Saturday, March 18th, you can once again see the different collections it consists of: the archeology of the biblical East - with the fund acquired by Fr. Bonaventura Ubach at the beginning of the 20th century during his travels through the Holy Land, Egypt, Syria and Iraq for the purpose of illustrating the Bible – goldsmithing, ancient painting, modern painting and sculpture – including a representation of French Impressionism unique to our home , in addition to works by Rusiñol, Casas, the Vayreda brothers and the Olot school, among many others–, the Byzantine and Slavic icons of the Phos Hilaron exhibition, and the Nigra Sum section, which contains the iconography of the Virgin of Montserrat.
As novelties in the permanent collection: Fortuny's work The Tapestry Seller is on display again, a painting of a sensational Tiger by Ramon Martí Alsina has been added, two Romanesque tables from the Altarpiece of Sant Blai, as well like a recently restored Romanesque Virgin Mary. At the entrance, a sculpture by Ricard Vaccaro welcomes visitors.
The Montserrat Museum, which was declared of national interest by the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2006, is considered one of the national museum references. It receives more than 100,000 visitors annually. The monastery museum increases its funds, which reach nearly 4,000 objects, with constant donations from individuals and private entities.
