The Modern Art Museum of Tarragona opens on February 2 at 7 p.m. the Josep Royo exhibition. An open form that falls under weight curated by Carles Guerra. The exhibition was the result of research that allowed us to recover tapestries, works on paper and documents, with which we can trace an itinerary that takes us from 1963 to 1988.
This exhibition produced by the Museum of Modern Art of the Tarragona County Council aims to recover the legacy of a work that, viewed retrospectively, places Josep Royo (Barcelona, 1956) as someone who absorbed the innovations of modern sculpture. Especially that of the 1960s and 1970s, in which we must remember the felts of Robert Morris, the Indian fabrics of Robert Rauschenberg or the soft forms of Magdalena Abakanowicz. It was also influenced by the evolutions of painting that Joan Miró led - and of which Royo was a direct witness - or the experiences of expanded painting attributed to Claude Viallat.
The result was a radical and sensual work, which revived the tapestry tradition and placed it in the sphere of contemporary art. A corpus of works genuine enough to consider Royo an author with his own name.
The exhibition can be visited until May 28, 2023.
