Last days to visit Carmen Calvo's exhibition at the IVAM
bonart valencia - 30/12/22

The Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM) closes the Carmen Calvo exhibition on January 15. The exhibition, which has been on display at the museum since July and was extended for two months, brings together a total of seventy works that include the artist's first forays into the field of installation, drawings, books, postcards, photographs and his sculptural works.

The exhibition, curated by Nuria Enguita and Joan Ramón Escrivà, is organized on the occasion of the awarding of the Julio González Award to Carmen Calvo, an award previously received by creators such as George Baselitz, Eduardo Chillida, Miquel Navarro, Jasper Johns or Annette Messenger and Mona Hatoum. The Valencian artist is the third woman to receive this recognition.

The exhibition reviews his main lines of research from the late 1960s to the present day. This is the third exhibition that the IVAM dedicates to Carmen Calvo after the shows organized in 1990 and 2007. In one of its central galleries, the IVAM presents for the first time a recreation of the artist's workshop in Valencia, where shelves and chests of drawers hold a selection of antique objects, mannequins, clippings from notebooks and magazines rescued from scraps and antique dealers that Calvo has intervened.

The exhibition also includes Silenci I and II, a piece with a great emotional charge and one of the creator's first forays into installation territory, with dozens of white tombstones piled on a wall from which hang more than a thousand daggers threatening An unpublished work created by the artist during the pandemic closes the exhibition. It is about the enigmatic La naturalesa agita (2010-2018), an installation composed of hundreds of women's fingers in terracotta that protrude from its walls and that refers to earthly pleasures, oppression and inequality.
