"Sodade" de Rashid Johnson a Hauser & Wirth

\
bonart brick - 27/10/22

Rashid Johnson presents Hauser & Wirth with the Sodade sample, which takes its title from a Cape Verdean song from the 1950s popularized by Cesária Évora that recounts a deep state of emotional nostalgia on the “long way to São Tomé”. With Sodade, Johnson continues to be inspired by the chronicles of critical history and stories of journeys and migrations.

The exhibition, which can be visited until November 13, presents recently created bronze sculptures and seascape paintings that will be exhibited together with bruise paintings and surrender paintings. The latter make up the last installment of a body of work created by Johnson based on the iconography of his well-known Anxious Men series.

Johnson's work is recognized for creating narratives that include a wide range of everyday objects and materials, often associated with his childhood and that refer to collective aspects of African American history and identity. In Sodade, Rashid Johnson continues to incorporate into his work materials loaded with symbolism that have to do with his personal history, exploring collective narratives of longing and migration while offering an emotional perception of history from the present.
