The Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, Raquel Sánchez Jiménez, presented the 2021 National Architecture Prize to the architect Carme Pinós. The event was held at the Llotja de Palma, a city chosen for the architect's strong ties with the island of Mallorca, and was inaugurated by the President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Francina Armengol.
The event was attended by the Minister, the President and the award-winning architect, with the participation of the Director General of Urban Agenda and Architecture, Iñaqui Carnicero Alonso-Colmenares and the architect and historian Juan José Lahuerta, who 'has been in charge of praising the honoree, as well as with the architect and communicator Núria Moliner as master of ceremonies. The award ceremony was attended by the Government of the Balearic Islands and the Official Association of Architects of the Balearic Islands (COAIB).
The 2021 National Architecture Prize, the announcement of which took place last December, has been awarded to Carme Pinós in recognition of her work and career, which has led her to become a benchmark for in architecture both nationally and internationally. During her speech, the Minister emphasized the importance of the figure of the architect, the second woman in the history of Spain to receive this award, referring to her “as a reference in Spanish architecture, the name of the which can be heard in the best schools in the world and its models are exhibited in the most important international museums ”.
Carme Pinós, very excited, emphasized in her speech the social work that permeates her architecture "because there is always the client but beyond that there is our true client, society". Grateful for the generosity of the jury that proposed her and declared her worthy of this award, Pinós ended by expressing the desire to continue offering "many more things to our society."
The General Director of Urban Agenda and Architecture, Iñaqui Carnicero Alonso-Colmenares, also highlighted the relevance of the work of Carme Pinós and her role in Spanish architecture because “it fully complies with the values of architecture of the 21st century, for its commitment to public space, the city, social responsibility and the ability to generate solutions to social problems through architecture ”. Carnicero also expressed that Pinós represents a model of inspiration for young architects because "she has been a pioneer in making and understanding architecture in unfavorable times in terms of gender".
The architect and historian Juan José Lahuerta has been in charge of praising the winner, referring to its architecture as something organic. "His is an architecture that starts from the ground, from the context, and that, knowing it, refuses to impose itself on it", giving as an example the remodeling of the surroundings of Plaça de la Gardunya, in Barcelona, Which he has considered one of his masterpieces, although "his best works are yet to come," he concluded.
