After the forced shutdown imposed by the COVID 19 pandemic, the Sant Lluc Association for Art Mataró presents a new call, the ninth, of the Torres García Biennial Painting Prize - City of Mataró 2022, thus fulfilling its goal main: the promotion of artistic activities in the city of Mataró. The Sant Lluc Association for Art Mataró has always expressed its firm desire for qualitative and quantitative growth in this activity which not only broadens its field of action, but also bears the name of the city of Mataró throughout the State.

The Biennial Painting Prize, named the Torres García Prize - City of Mataró, is endowed with an important economic prize. With a national scope, it has a jury of great professional prestige. Torres García represents an international symbol recognized and valued for the innovative nature of his painting, from the early Noucentisme to constructivism and his participation in the first avant-garde.

His connection with Mataró, his studies at the Municipal School of Arts and Crafts and the impact that the Maresme caused on the young Uruguayan, permeated, in a way, his entire artistic career.

In recognition, a small drawing of his, in pen, was chosen as the logo for this Painting Prize, which illustrates the book “Historia de mi vida” and which represents the train and the station of Mataró, symbols of 'this pioneering railway city in Spain. With this simple graphic design, the award links the artist with the city of Mataró, represented respectively by the Torres García de Montevideo Foundation (Uruguay) and the Most Excellent City Council of Mataró.

The jury for this edition will be made up of Juan Manuel Bonet, former director of IVAM, Reina Sofia National Museum Art Center and the Instituto Cervantes. Poet, art critic and exhibition curator; Glòria Bosch, art historian, researcher and curator of exhibitions. She has been the cultural coordinator of the Caixa de Barcelona Foundation, director of the Girona Art Museum and art director at Espais Center d'Art Contemporani and the Vila Casas Foundation; Emmanuel Guigon, director of the Museu Picasso in Barcelona, art critic and curator of exhibitions; Julio Vaquero, painter, draftsman and sculptor. Artistic advisor to the Sorigué Foundation. Writer of the TVE program "La mitad invisible". He has held numerous national and international exhibitions; Eva Vàzquez, a graduate in Art History, cultural journalist at the newspaper “El Punt Avui” and Antoni Luis, president of the Sant Lluc Association for Art Mataró, or a delegate, who will act as Secretary of the Jury .

Rules for the Torres García Biennial Painting Prize - City of Mataró 2022

1. Participants

Older people living in Spain will be able to take part.

2. Work

Each participant can only compete with one work, which has never been selected or awarded in any other competition.

3. Technical aspects

The theme, support and technique are free. The minimum dimensions of the work are 100 x 81 cm in any position, and the maximum 162 x 162 cm. The slat or frame guard, if any, shall not exceed 3 cm in width. Works protected with glass will not be accepted, but with unbreakable plastic material.

4. Pre-selection

4.1. With a deadline of February 18, 2022 , participants must send an email to the address: premitorresgarcia2022@gmail.com

with the following three files:

- THE REGISTRATION FORM , in pdf , which must be downloaded from the website of the Association ( www.santlluc.org ) and completed duly.

- A Word document with the reproduction of both sides of the DNI or PERMIT OF RESIDENCE, and the reproduction of TWO RECENT WORKS of the artist.

- The digitized image of the work submitted to the competition, in jpg format, at 72 dpi and a maximum size of 2 Mb.

The three files must necessarily go in the same mail and all three must have as file name the two surnames, separated by a hyphen and age, with the corresponding extension. For example:

4.2. On this documentation presented, the Jury will proceed to the selection of the works that will be admitted to the competition. The authors will be notified by e-mail by March 9 of the acceptance or non-acceptance of their work.

4.3. Along with this communication, the necessary instructions (addresses, deadlines) for the delivery of the work and its subsequent withdrawal will be attached.

5. Delivery of the work  

5.1. The work must be transported and delivered with the necessary packaging to protect it, and which must be reusable for return.

5.2. The work will travel at the author's own risk, paid postage and under his responsibility. The insurance, if made, will be borne by each of the participants.

5.3. The work will be signed by the author and, on the back, the name and surname of the author, the title of the work and, in the case of a non-figurative work, the indication “Dalt” and “Baix” .

6. Finalists and Prize

6.1. The reception of the works admitted to the competition will close on April 1. Once closed, the Jury will proceed to select the 40 finalists .

6.2. By April 9th, the selected artists will be notified by email if they have been shortlisted or not.

6.3. A single prize of 9,000 is established for the winning work at the discretion of the jury. The relevant tax withholdings will be deducted from the amount of the prize in accordance with current legislation.

6.4 . The Prize cannot be considered void by the Jury.

6.5. Up to four awards can be given to the top four finalists.

6.6. The winning work will remain the property of the organizing entity (the Sant Lluc Association for Art). The author assigns to the Entity all the exploitation rights during the time established by law and for the whole world, by signing a document at the time of delivery of the Prize.

6.7. By express wish of the organizers and sponsors, the Sant Lluc Association gives the winning work to the City Council, by means of a contract, so that it becomes part of the City's Heritage.

6.8 . The winning works of the different editions are permanently exhibited in the ESPAI TORRES GARCÍA, in the Foyer of the TECNOCAMPUS of Mataró.

7. Verdict and Exposition

7.1. The finalist works will be exhibited at the Iluro Foundation Athenaeum, La Riera 92, Mataró, from June 10 to August 28, 2022 .

7.2. On the day of the inauguration, June 10, 2022 , the unappealable verdict of the Jury will be made public. Prior to the public event, the winner and the winners will be personally informed.

7.3. Along with the exhibition, a catalog with the finalist works will be published, as well as the composition of the Jury and the minutes of its verdict.

8. Sale

Non-winning participants wishing to sell the work must anticipate that the sale will account for ten percent of the value indicated on the registration form in favor of the Organizing Entity. These profits will be used to promote the art and to finance the next edition. The winning work is excluded from sale.

9. Incidents

9.1. The Organizing Entity will take the utmost care in the conservation of the works, but declines all responsibility for loss, damage, damage, theft or any other damage beyond its control that may occur during transport, deposit or exhibition.

9.2. The authors of the exhibited works expressly waive the copyright corresponding to the explicit advertising and communication of the Prize, in any medium, visual, printed or digital, and in the exhibition's Hand Program and in the Prize Catalog.

9.3. The Jury is empowered to decide any aspect not provided for in these rules.

9.4. The works not withdrawn within the indicated deadlines will be considered abandoned and the organization will be able to dispose of them freely.

9.5. Participating in the Contest implies full acceptance of the rules.
